RPGaDay 2020 Day 10 – “Want” #RPGADAY2020
The tenth prompt is “Want”.
What do I want from my RPGs? An escape from reality definitely factors among them. I want a good story… without a story there isn’t really any reason to do what the characters set out to do, right? I hear those people in the back… those people whose characters are just numbers on a page and want to make the imaginary things die… say “But Mr. GM! Writing the story is your job!”
Wrong! My job is to develop an overarching plot that will motivate the players and spur them forward… but the idea of writing a story… to put something compelling together that entertains, generates the cheers of victory and causes people to loom closely over the table as dice are cast. That kind of story… the story that I want… takes everyone at the table. If even one player doesn’t treat the game with at least some vested interest, the immersion falls apart. I’ve had glimpses of this in the past, but ultimately it never lasts. It’s that hard-to-find, harder-to-hold-onto holy grail for me.
I also want my friends back. COVID certainly stands in the way of my room full of friends, playing games… Online is workable, but still isn’t the same. I look forward to when I can open my doors and run games in person again. Until then, I craft my stories, waiting for the day to run them openly once more.
