RPGaDay 2020 Day 8 – “Shade” #RPGADAY2020

Today’s prompt is “Shade”.

I suppose I will take this as literal and talk about shade, as in darkness.  As I spoke to in my post about “Forest”, setting is probably one of the most important NPCs a GM has at their disposal.  One of the most powerful tools rolled up in a setting is the amount of light.  Shadows are evocative and you should use them to your advantage.  Flickering flames, magical darkness or the stillness of a cold, dark night when undead are about… darkness lurks everywhere and the description of the lack of light immediately steers the player’s eyes to those patches of shadow, wondering what they might conceal.

People have always been fascinated with the duality of light and dark and as a GM, you should absolutely tap into that natural mistrust of the dark.  Let it help to tell the tale of your game.
