Game Breaker

The runners are contacted by their fixer and asked to meet with him at Club Helix at 7PM.  When they arrive, the fixer is sitting on the edge of his seat and seems restless.  Regardless of his state, he will wait until all runners have arrived before telling them anything about the job.

“There’s a small war going on all around us chummers, and the public doesn’t know ‘bout it yet.  Some fuckin’ crazy Vory bastard smuggled an honest-to-God Thunderstruck Gauss Cannon into the city and then friggin’ lost it.  It’s changed hands a few times since the Vory, but it seems to be slipping into the cracks again and that’s where you come in.  Someone with deep pockets is contracting out to the likes of us because the gun has headed east and has disappeared into the NAN.  Since they can no longer track it, they have to resort to more nefarious means.  They need you to go get this gun and either bring back proof that it has been destroyed, or deliver it intact to one of their people.  Payment will be tiered, depending on the state of the weapon when delivered.  If delivered intact or all pieces returned, the payment will be 45000¥ to be divided amongst you.  If only part of the gun is returned, you will receive 30000¥.  You will be given a 15000¥ advance as a contract for your services.  These prices are not negotiable.  Interested?”

The gun that has gone missing is a Thunderstruck Gauss Cannon, as well as a small collection of cannon rounds and batteries to fire the thing.  The runners aren’t told what kind of gun it was (though they can always do some homework and find out since the shadows are abuzz).  The UCAS has no idea where the gun has ended up, but the net put up in the Eastern UCAS never caught sight of the smuggler’s LAV (Cascade Skraacha, see below) leaving Sioux’s borders.

The fixer doesn’t have details on who has possessed the gun, nor what kind of gun it is.  The runners will have to hit up their contacts for the information.

Contacts will provide a mixed bag of results but eventually a few things will become evident:

The Triads hit the Vory for the gun, only to have a Mafia raid take it from them.  Knowing how hot the gun was, the mob paid a smuggler named Blitzkrieg to take it to New York.  He never made it.  See Shadowspeak Transcripts for speculation…

The Vory and Triads are after the same thing and will aim to stop the runners any chance they get.  It should provide a good means for car chases to fill the gaps as they cross the various nations.

The Sioux military is well aware that the LAV is in their nation (they shot it down) and they even know where it is.  However, they know how dangerous the town is where the LAV crashed and have decided to camp out outside the town watching to see if anyone will brave the ghost town to retrieve it.  If anyone goes in and comes out alive, they will be detained and searched to make sure the gun does not leave.

The ghost town of Flatwillow appears deserted to any who go to pass it on Route 224 and at its peak the population only reached 600.  Vastly rural, the town is predominantly farmland, but there is a large church and a cemetery along the main drag of the town.  Dotted with “ Mom & Pop” stores along the main street, it looks like a relic from the late 20th century.  No one has reportedly lived here since the Sioux forced out the white man, though there is evidence that people have squatted here before, as mid-sixties model motorcycles are parked in front of the general store.  They look rusted, as if neglected for a long time.

Map of Flatwillow Area

Flatwillow Area

The red box is the church, town hall and cemetery.  The red dot is the downed craft.  The two are roughly a kilometer apart.

The reason no one uses Flatwillow anymore is due to a severe Shedim problem.  The town was overrun after the comet and they’ve been amassing nearby corpses for some time.  The town is run by a couple Master Shedim, one of which resides in the corpse of Blitzkrieg.

The Skraacha crashed on the banks of Flatwillow Creek.  The outer hull is badly scorched where a Sioux anti-tank rocket ultimately brought vehicle down.  Blitzkrieg’s paranoia ended up saving the cargo, as the inner hull wasn’t breached by the blast.  The electronics on the outer portion of the LAV are destroyed, so the runners will have to squeeze into through the hole in the outer hull or the cockpit window.  Water from the creek has crept into the hull, making the interior smell of stagnant water and the hum of mosquitoes is fairly thick.  Any runner with Industrial Mechanic can make a test to try and gain access to the manual release for the inner hull to get to Blitzkrieg’s payload.  Most of it are personal supplies (ammo for the Skraacha’s guns, food and water, etc) but there is a large crate that stores the Thunderstruck Cannon with some additional crates of battery packs and cannon rounds.

When the runners near the downed craft, the population stirs and begins to converge on their position.  Blitzkrieg still lies in the pilot’s seat with the dashboard sprayed in gore from his impact with it.  However, once the runners enter the ship, it will try to ambush the runners in the tight quarters and delay them until they are surrounded in shedim.

The team will have to fight their way out of town with the heavy crates, though there’s no rule saying they can’t break things up by using the Gauss Cannon…

To really make a mess of things, have the Vory and/or Triads show up and attempt to take it back.  Whenever a Vory or Triad member is shot and killed, a shedim moves in and has them get back up.

They will have to either escape the Sioux Wildcats or sufficiently conceal the weapon to get past the Sioux blockade.
